  1. Best Image Quality of All Cone Beam Machines
    1. Rotating Anode

      NTVG does not use a traditional fixed anode, as many of our competitors do.  Instead we use a Rotating Anode which has a number of advantages.  The biggest advantage is that the rotating anode is the resulting smaller focal spot. This has a direct effect on image quality.

      In a Rotating anode - The anode target disc (1) rotates on a highly specialized ball bearing system (2) The target is subjected to a focused stream of electrons (3) emanating from the cathode (4) and accelerated by a high potential difference between the target disc and the cathode, when the electron beam hits the anode it produces the x-ray beam


    2. Small Focal Spot
      Focal Spot is a key factor in determining image resolution and, hence, the quality of the X-ray image. As the focal spot decreases in size, resolution and the ability to detect detail are improved, enabling geometric or projection magnification without peripheral shadowing, an effect called geometric “unsharpness” or penumbra. Ideally, the focal spot would have a diameter close to zero. In practice, depending on the tube design, the focal spot can be as small as 1µm or less in diameter.

    1. cont. Technically speaking, focal spot is the actual area on the target where the electrons transfer their energy to the target atoms and where the X-rays are generated.
      Because NTVG has a Rotating Anode, we are able to have one of the smallest focal spots available  -. 3mm.  The iCat is .5mm.

    2. Number of exposures
      360 degree rotation with 360 exposures- The NewTom VG is one of the only manufacturers that takes a complete 360 degree scan and captures an image at every degree – many other manufacturers stop at 270 or 300 – which tends to lead to more scatter and artifacts in the scan.  One may think that this means more radiation, but with Safe Beam and pulsed exposure NT continues to limit the radiation exposure of the patient.  By taking more exposures, there is more information and less hypothesizing about actual anatomy.  The effect of this hypothesizing by other Cone Beam 3D machines is seen regularly in the scatter.  See image to left.

    3. kV and mA flexibility
      NT VG has an adjustable 1-20mA. This is adjusted in conjunction with our patented Safe Beam technology.  By adjusting the mA, the NTVG produces more consistent scans because it only uses the necessary amount of radiation needed for a particular patient.  Meaning that no matter what the size of the patient is, the NTVG will produce only enough radiation to properly scan the patient and give the consistent contrast that is expected from every NT scan.
      Many competitors do not adjust the mA and their resulting images fluctuate with the size of the patient.  With NT the mA changes and the images all have a similar look regardless of the patient’s size. 

  1. Safe Beam Technology
    Before performing the actual scan, the NTVG does a Scout Scan in which information is gathered for use during the actual Scan.  This initial “quick” scan last only seconds and is very low exposure.  The Scout Scan is used to help determine the density of the subject and aids in the calculations for Safe Beam
    Safe Beam is patented technology in which the radiation is automatically adjusted based on the patient’s size and bone density.  This means that a child may receive up to 40% less radiation than an adult.  The NewTom family of products is the only manufacture to have this technology. 
    ALARA –“As low as reasonably achievable” – As important as the Hippocratic Oath, the ALARA concept maintains that the all doctors must consider the cumulative effects of radiation and use every possible method available for keeping patient exposure to a minimum.  NewTom’s Safe Beam technology, assists doctors in maintaining this moral requirement for their patients.

Ensuring Patient Safety

Our NewTom VG employs Safe Beam technology, which means that it automatically adjusts the radiation dosage according to the patient’s age and size.  This technology utilizes intermittent bursts of radiation only milliseconds in duration during image acquisition, and not the constant radiation stream typical of many other CBVI imaging products, patient’s exposure to radiation is in most cases significantly less than that of other systems.  Children, for example, receive up to 40% less radiation than adults during a typical scan.  NewTom’s Safe Beam image acquisition is the proven safe technology available today, for both patients and dental team.
